Editorial Reviews:

The ASO Ankle Stabilizing Orthosis is one of the most popular ankle supports with coaches, trainers and physical therapists. The contoured tongue provides exceptional fit and is constructed of light-weight yet durable Cool Flex material. This material also lines the inside back of the boot, providing increased comfort to the achilles area. The polyester-cotton laces are strong and resist shrinking.

Summary: The best compromise in support and mobility
Comment: This is the brace my orthopedic surgeon gave to me after we decided not to operate and instead manage my condition with a brace. I started wearing it right away, and it made such a difference, even in everyday walking. There are two straps, each of which wrap across the top then under the heel (one per side). This helps compensate for the ankle's tendancy to "roll" sideways either way, due to weakness in the supporting tendons/ligaments. And for all that support, you still get a largely unrestricted up-down-pointing motion, so that you don't really notice that it's there.

Also, the front wraparound support hides the laces, so it doesn't look so obvious you're wearing it.

I tried the Aircast single-strap wrap braces, and they don't offer anywhere near the amount of support that this one does. It can begin to pinch and be uncomfortable should you tighten it all too much, but you find that balance pretty easily. I have two now, and alternate days wearing them so that they get a chance to air out.

By now I've tried them all, including the Swedo braces, and this is the best of them all.

Summary: as advertised
Comment: - not as flexible as an ace for range of motion, but gives more support and is more adjustable than your shoes - has laces and velcro straps.
- for initial treatment of a sprain I found the air cast gave more relief from pain and adequate support, however once I was up and walking around I wanted the aso to make sure I didn't turn my foot the wrong way again.
